Mission

The mission of the sales brochures museum of lost brands is to show sales brochures of brands that have disappeared, mainly focusing on the second half of the 20th century. There are many brands that have disappeared in this period, but the scope is technical consumer products. Examples are cars like Triumph, Daf and Simca, toys like Dinky Toys and Rokal TT, and cameras like Praktica, Yashica and Minolta. I have an open mind however when it comes to deciding which brochures should be on display in the museum, so feel free to suggest other brands, especially when you don't mind to scan brochures for the museum.

The museum is not commercial, but sees itself as part of the public domain. I will not sell advertising space to organizations like Google and I will not place any tracking cookies. However, if growing numbers of visitors will result in higher costs of keeping the museum online, I will consider the possibility of seeking sponsors.

History

In 2010 I found some British Leyland brochures while cleaning the attic. I wondered if these brochures could be made accessible on the internet in the same way as modern sales brochures were displayed: pageable. The British Leyland Brochure Museum was born with my Dutch Triumph 2500TC brochure from 1975 as the first item on display. Shortly after the launch I found some interesting camera brochures so the name of the museum changed to Sales Brochures Museum of Lost Brands. Because of the start as British Leyland museum, the brochures of the still existing brands like Jaguar and Mini are also in the collection, but only for as long as they were part of the family.

2014 saw more and more visitors using an android device. The pageflip tool did not support android so I had to search for another tool. I found a good solution in PageFlip5. A big advantage of PageFlip5 are the fast download times allowing me to use bigger images. And that's important because of the ever-growing resolution of monitor screens.

In 2018 Google stated that PC/Mac days were over. To rank high in search results a site should be designed with the smartphone in mind as primary target device: a so-called responsive design. And unfortunately my site wasn't responsive. So I needed to do a total redesign. My first thought was to switch to Wordpress, because responsiveness had largely been integrated in their basics. After many months of testing I dropped this plan. Wordpress apparently was not built for my wishes: the site was dead slow, it didn't look very good and the plugins for booklet and leaflet style viewing were highly immature, to say the least. So I returned to HTML5 and CSS3.

Contributors

The present collection of the museum is the result of the contributions by its fans. Many people who liked the museum scanned their brochures. Without them the museum would not deserve a place on the internet. Thank you friends!

The Brochures Museum co-operates with the cars-only site Free Car Brochures which shows brochures of all car brands, old and new. It displays brochures in a different way. The main differences between the Brochures Museum and Free Car Brochures are:

The Brochure Museum shows brochures in a way that comes close to the real browsing experience, but does not show all car marques and shows other products as well.
Free Car Brochures shows all car marques, but displays the brochure's pages as plain images in a higher resolution, which has the advantage that you may enlarge the images and save them to your own device.

Missie

Bedankt vrienden!

Samenwerking

logo Free Car Brochures
